Beyond the built-in tools
Welcome to Module 8: custom tools. Foundry Agent Service lets you build agents without deep AI or machine learning expertise, and tools let those agents take actions for you. The built-in tools already help a lot: they gather knowledge, and they write and run code. But some jobs need something a model can't do on its own, like finding one particular customer's order in your company's systems. A model only knows what it learned in training and what's in the conversation, so it can't reach into your order database by itself. That's what a custom tool is for: a tool built from your own code, or from a third-party service or API, that the agent can call when it needs to.
A support desk that keeps up
Picture a retail company whose support team is buried under the same questions, over and over. Where's my order? When will it arrive? Can I send it back? Replies slow down, and customers get frustrated. With Foundry Agent Service and custom tools, you can build an FAQ agent that handles those common questions. Give it a custom tool that looks up customer orders, and it answers with the real details, while your team focuses on the harder cases. In this module, you'll see why custom tools matter, the options for building them, and how to connect them to an agent, and then you'll build one yourself. Done well, custom tools boost productivity, improve accuracy, and let you shape an agent around your exact needs.
