Tools beyond the model
Welcome to Module 9: MCP tools. Agents can do a lot, but many tasks still need tools outside the language model: APIs, databases, and internal services. Wiring each of those by hand works at first. But as your system grows and changes, every custom connection is one more thing to build, update, and fix. The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, offers a cleaner way. An MCP server holds a catalog of tools, and an agent connected to it can discover and use those tools on demand. That makes your AI solution more robust, easier to scale, and easier to maintain.
A cosmetics stockroom
Picture a cosmetics retailer whose team wants an assistant to help manage inventory. It should check how much of each product is in stock, and look at recent sales trends. Through an MCP server, the assistant connects to tools that assess inventory and suggest what to do, like restocking a best-selling lipstick before it runs out. In this module, you'll set up an MCP server and client, connect tools to an Azure AI agent dynamically, and build your own MCP tool solution with Foundry Agent Service.
